The Summer Artist / Educator Residency (SAER) is a studio-based artist residency built for nationwide art educators and teaching artists. This week-long studio residency is located at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our focus is to uplift creative educators with professional development hours and dedicated studio space to experiment, research, and reflect. This dynamic environment gives educators dedicated time to make art, create connections with peers, and discover new skills for the classroom.

STUDIO CARE & USE AGREEMENT

The following safety regulations are provided with your immediate safety and long-term health in mind. Your cooperation and compliance with these rules support the safe, healthy, and efficient operation of these areas for all Moore students.

As members of the College community, students have the responsibility for maintaining the standards and expectations of that community, including abiding by policies and regulations established by the College. Student conduct that violates these policies and regulations may result in College disciplinary action as outlined in the Moore Student Handbook.

SOLVENT USE, DISPOSAL, AND STORAGE OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

Use only the Gamsol provided by the college - NO TURPENOID, & no other solvents unless approved.
No solvent washers, polyester resins, or cobalt-based accelerators are permitted.
Store solvents in the appropriate YELLOW flammable storage cabinet.
All solvents must be in a capped/lidded/closed glass container when not in use. This means you must take the extra step to clean brushes at the end of a work session rather than leaving them to stand. Clean brushes in baby oil. Use only studio sinks - Do not use restroom sink to clean/wash brushes, tools, etc.
All containers must be labeled as to their current contents only/GHS information –(no food containers).
No paper or rags may be left on the floor, use appropriate bins to dispose of them.
All solvent soiled rags, paper towels, etc. must be discarded in RED flammable containers at the end of each work session. Do not leave these items lying around the studio.
Solvents must be discarded in the appropriate drum. DO NOT POUR SOLVENTS INTO ANY SINK.
No aerosol cans are allowed in studios – store them in the YELLOW flammable storage cabinet.
Students should review the MSDS sheets available outside the studio classrooms and understand disposal/handling methods.
Spray paint and fixatives cannot be used in classrooms, studios, or hallways. Only use aerosols in the walk-in spray booth located in Sarah Peter 603. See 2DTechnician for training.
A second smaller spray booth can be used outside printmaking class hours. It is located in Sarah Peter 610 (Print Studio).
Keep liquids away from electrical sources

STUDIO MAINTENANCE

Protect the floors, walls, etc. with newspaper/drop cloths/etc. before working with materials like gesso, paint, glue, etc. Dropcloth & newspaper must be neatly put away after use.
Keep your materials, work, and belongings clean and organized in your designated areas.
Keep floors clear of materials, work, tools, etc. so that maintenance staff may clean regularly.
Report any safety concerns/issues to technicians immediately.
Do not attach anything to windows or ventilation. (paper, tape, stickers, etc.).
Always leave the studio in better condition than you found it. Others will follow by example.
Studios cannot be enclosed by the use of cloth or dividers.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

No smoking or drinking of alcoholic beverages at any time in the studios.
Do not come to the studio while intoxicated
The making of drug paraphernalia, tobacco pipes, ashtrays, etc. is not permitted in the studio. To make/have these objects in the studio is considered possession and must be directed to Joshua Wilkin, Student Affairs (jwilkin@moore.edu).
Do not eat or drink in the studios or leave food containers/trash.
No electric tea kettles, coffee pots, hotplates, microwaves, etc. to be used in the studios.
Never use power tools alone.
Power tools that create dust are not allowed in studios. Keep sanding and grinding work to the woodshop or spray booths.
Always use personal protective equipment; safety goggles and masks are required when cutting, grinding, carving, mixing, etc.
All extension cords must be heavy-duty, 16-3, grounded. Usually orange and always three-pronged. NO residential extension cords. Extension cords are not to cross any pedestrian pathways.
Students must clear all chemicals brought into their areas before use with an MSDS supplied to the Studio Technician prior to bringing the chemical/material on campus.
No outside furniture is to be used in the studio, students must use the chairs, desks, etc provided.
Bicycles may not be stored in studios.
If a student seeks an exception to one or more of these regulations, they must seek approval by their faculty and Department Chair/ Program Director.

Tuition includes graduate credit-bearing workshops and activities, speaker series, field trips, and catered lunches Monday - Friday. This year, Moore College of Art & Design has added optional housing for SAER participants for an additional fee of $595 ($85/night).
